Pada 1492, sebuah ekspedisi rentas ke Lautan Atlantik yang dipimpin oleh Christopher Columbus mendapati Benua Amerika, benua yang banyak belum diketahui di Eropah dan di luar sistem politik dan ekonomi Dunia Lama. Empat pelayaran Columbus menjadi awal penjajahan Sepanyol di Benua Amerika.
