A post office was established in 1877 and remained in operation until 1906, with a five-year interruption from 1883 to 1888. Franklin H. Justice served as the postmaster. Mail was then sent from Norse. In the early 1890s, Hurst Springs had 100 residents served by a cotton gin, a corn mill, a church, and two general stores. It lost three-quarters of its population in the 1930s then returned to 100 from the late 1940s to the 1950s. Farmers who lived here raised cattle and grew grain and sorghum. There were several new homes built here in the mid-1980s. Only eight people lived here in 2000.[2]
